MOULTRIE, Ga. — A group of Colquitt County residents is offering a fireworks show and festival Saturday, July 1, as part of a “Spirit Jam.”
The event will be held at Lakeside Assembly of God on Camilla Highway. It starts at 6 p.m. with water slides, rides and games. A series of concerts begin at 6:45 p.m., and the fireworks start at 8:45.
The event also features a cornhole tournament and a “Chip to the Green” tournament. Both start at 5:30. Contact Julie Wingate, (229) 456-1539, about the cornhole tournament and Josh Fuller, (229) 529-0577, about Chip to the Green.
There are fees to enter the tournaments, and organizers are also asking for “small donations” for rides, games and food, according to Susan Childs, spokesperson for the group. The money will benefit Susan Rosengrant, a former Colquitt County resident now living in Missouri. Rosengrant suffers from acute lymphocytic leukemia and money raised during the event will go toward a bone marrow transplant, according to Childs and information posted online. For more information about Rosengrant, see the Facebook page at Supporting #teamsusan.
Childs described the Spirit Jam as “a gospel ministry to kids of all walks of life.” She said organizers have made connections with the Boys and Girls Club of Moultrie and Colquitt County, Heritage Church’s Breathe program, other local churches and the Thomasville Stars, a club for underprivileged youth in Thomasville. In all, they’re hoping for 800 children and youth to participate in the event.
The jam has several sponsors, including Soul Shine Clothing Co., Country Financial, Southern Oak Outfitters, Napier Flower Shop and Goodno Electric, and numerous others in the community have donated items to help make it a success, Childs said.
She said part of the idea behind the festival was the fact that Colquitt County has no other organized fireworks show associated with the Fourth of July.
