VALDOSTA, Ga. — Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton — as in mister 3.8 million Instagram followers, 2010 Heisman Trophy winner and 2015 NFL MVP — stopped in Valdosta this past weekend for a few pancakes at IHOP.
Newton was traveling from Atlanta to Florida, and he had a full entourage in tow — a group of 70 that included high school football players, coaches, Newton’s dad and his manager.
The NFL icon has his own foundation, the Cam Newton Foundation, that hosts tournaments for high school football teams, among other things. Newton even coaches some of these players.
Bree Lowe, an IHOP server and avid sports fan, said the restaurant got a call Thursday night about the large group stopping by to eat Friday morning.
“I though it might’ve been a hoax, somebody playing around,” Lowe said, initially not wiling to believe that she’d get a chance to meet the one and only Cam Newton in person.
But it wasn’t a joke, and the next day Lowe let Newton in through the side door and showed him to a booth. The quarterback and his crew filled half the restaurant, but they were in and out in an hour, Lowe said.
Although Lowe, 21, is a big fan of Newton’s, she said she tried to “keep it as normal as possible” while she took his order, which consisted of mozzarella sticks, hash browns sprinkled with diced tomatoes, and chocolate pancakes.
Newton was nice during the visit, Lowe said, cracking jokes and even signing a football for her.
Meeting the celebrity was like a dream that happened in the blink of an eye, she said.
“I don’t think it’s really set in,” she said. “I love football, I love sports. I’m a Georgia fan, but I watched him play with Auburn that whole year (when) he took them to the (Bowl Championship Series), and they beat us and beat everybody.
“He’s got skills.”
