MEIGS — The city’s top official addressed the lack of attendance — and interest — in Meigs’ upcoming comprehensive plan.

Mayor Cheryl Walters discussed the matter during Monday’s city council meeting.

“I’m pretty burned up about that,” Walters said, as she has encouraged residents to get involved at numerous city council meetings.

Two meetings were conducted on the comprehensive plan back in May.

One resident attended one of the two meetings.

Walters addressed the parameters of the upcoming plan, which includes improvements for better sidewalks, streets, lighting, and upgrading the city’s outdated water system.

“We need a new water system,” she said, also noting the city has applied for major grants to aid in the improvements.

Addressing those in attendance, Walters said, “You broke my heart, but it’s not too late to get involved.”

Pastor Willie Mcneil of Kairos Worship Center, who is on the plan’s steering committee with Walters, also was present to address the comprehensive plan.

“I echo what the mayor says,” he said, noting the main goal is to get more residents involved.

Walters added she would like to see city council members become more involved with the plan.

In other business, the city council:

• approved providing public copies of the city’s leash ordinance at different city locales.

• approved declaring surplus equipment.

• heard an update on the city’s charter, with a first draft to be presented at the July meeting.

• heard an update on the status of the city’s dump truck.

• discussed the prospect of an influent screen for the city’s treatment pond, which will total to $112,722.85; no action taken.

• discussed the prospect of a different allocation process of the proposed special purpose local options sales tax (SPLOST) 2018 dispersion; no action taken.

• approved a $730 expenditure for the annual Meigs pageant.
