TIFTON — Just how fun is the camp at Tift Gymnastics Academy?
“I wanna stay all day,” said one of the youngest attendees, who added that not only was she coming back tomorrow (Tuesday), but she would be coming “the next day and the next day and the next day.”
The gymnastics exercises might have felt like a giant playground to the kids, who had a chance to jump on trampolines, tumble, play duck-duck-goose and get snacks.
“We try to make it fun,” said Courtney Coleman, who is one of TGA’s assistants for the summer camp sessions.
Coleman said the attendees got to work in all four regular gymnastics events: balance beam, parallel bars, floor exercise and vault.
“We do the basics,” she said.
Many of the disciplines were combined into one during Monday’s sessions, which was an obstacle course of sorts, featuring balance beam, tumbling, a trampoline and a springboard.
By far, the trampoline was the most popular portion.
“They love that one,” said Coleman.
Though they will work on the same events all three days of camp, Coleman said they shook it up to keep everything fresh.
While Monday’s younger group was all female, the group where Coleman was helping was mixed almost equally of boys and girls.
She said it was the most boys she’d seen in a camp this year. Coleman figures the popularity was because it kept them active.
This week’s camp runs through Wednesday. Two more youth camps will be conducted this summer, one for July 10-12 and another July 17-19, with each session running from 9 a.m. until noon. Camp is $60 per week, plus $25 registration if the camper’s family is not a member of TGA. Ages are 3-and-up.
