MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie Observer is seeking the county’s  oldest veteran. The search started two weeks ago, when Randall Lairsey’s family said they believe the 93-year-old Lairsey holds that honor.

The next day, Robert Gavigan, 94,  challenged that. A veteran of the Pacific Theater, he believes he is the oldest veteran living in Colquitt County.

A few days after we ran a clarification stating Gavigan’s claim, we received another telephone call. Rex King said his 98-year-old father, Jack King, served aboard the USS Vincennes during World War II, so that makes him the county’s oldest veteran.

The Observer asked on its Facebook page if any of our followers knew of an older veteran. We got a few responses, including words of appreciation for the service of all three men, but we did not learn of another veteran who might be older than Jack King.

If you know of one, please call The Observer at 985-4545 and let us know.
