DALTON, Ga. — Dalton residents could find out more about the possibility of a new facility for sixth- and seventh-graders when the Board of Education meets in a work session on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Board members met Wednesday evening for almost two-and-a-half hours in executive sessions closed to the public and media to discuss real estate and personnel.

No action was taken on anything after they emerged from the second executive session but board members indicated the discussions did help set the stage for a public discussion on Monday.

“We’ll be talking about things that we don’t need to keep in confidence,” said Chairman Rick Fromm. “Some of it will be structural, the type of structure we are looking for, how it relates to the overall mission of the school system.”

Fromm said they could also talk about financing for the facility.

Fromm said the school system is looking at “several sites” for a new school but hasn’t decided on a spot yet.

Superintendent Jim Hawkins said no action is expected to be taken on any of these items on Monday.

During a May work session, a committee comprised of administrators, staff and community members recommended against a flex schedule to solve overcrowding at Dalton High School, saying the concept is too expensive and not viable as a long-term solution. The estimated cost was almost $3 million.

Hawkins said then a 6/7 plan, with eighth- and some ninth-graders attending the current Dalton Middle facility, offers the best chance for addressing both overcrowding at the middle and high schools and helping Dalton High move down in Georgia High School Association classification for athletics, which would eliminate the need for teams to travel to metro Atlanta to compete.
