Mayo Woman’s Club announces art competition winners

MAYO, Fla. — The Mayo Woman’s Club has announced the 2017 Art Competition winners. Students had to create a Welcome to Mayo sign. The sign should have an artistic representation of the town’s motto “Welcome to Mayo, a small town with a big heart.” The best overall winner was Alexia Tovar. She also was the first place winner for the 9th-12th grade division. The overall winner for the third- to fifth-grade division was Carra Clark. The overall winner for the kindergarten to second-grade division was Leah Negrete. The first-grade winners were Negrete (first place), Kerrington Galbraith (second place) and Holland Jackson (third place). The honorable mentions were Ty Daraway and Trace Byrd. The second-grade honorable mention was Nicole Vargas. The third-grade winners were Clark (first place), Dayla Daniels (second place), Molly Hamlin (second place) and Jean Pax (third place). The honorable mentions were Naomi Gaitan, Izzy Koon and Roxy Schultz. Savannah Roberts was an honorable mention for the fourth grade. The fifth-grade winners are Ella Hancock (first place), Addison Byrd (second place) and Alondra Escamilla (third place). The honorable mention was Madelynn Rutherford. Drew Smith was the third place winner for the 9-12th grade section. Austin Locklear was an honorable mention for the eighth grade. 

 

World Atlatl Day at Georgia Museum of Agriculture

TIFTON, Ga. — Try out atlatl throwing on Saturday when the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College celebrates World Atlatl Day. Museum Marketing Assistant Rachel Nance said that one of the earliest weapons used by primitive man was the atlatl. That weapon will be available for guests to use as they take aim at an elephant-like mammal called the Gomphotherium at the Museum. Museum visitors can hunt the “Gump” with either the atlatl or a dart. Members of the Lower Muscogee Nation will also be on hand with a demonstration of historic weapons. The Museum and the Historic Village will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can also ride the Steam Train and enjoy treats at the Village Drug Store.

 

Mommy & Me Painting Workshops June 17

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Milledgeville Allied Arts will present Mommy & Me Painting Workshops on June 17. Each class will create a beach-themed painting.The first class of the day, for ages 3 and 4, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The 3- to 4-year-old class will create sea creatures using their handprints. This painting is sure to become a treasured piece of art for years to come.The second class, for ages 5 and up, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Parents and children ages 5 and up will paint a tranquil beach scene, perfect for displaying over the summer. This class will be the perfect class for young artists to create a new piece of art and enjoy an afternoon with mom or dad.The cost per pair is $50. Each additional child or adult is $25. Art exhibit features regional artists

ALBANY, Ga. — The Albany Area Arts Council opens the 18th annual Southwest Georgia Regional Fine Art Exhibition and Sale Thursday, June 1, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carnegie Library Gallery, 215 N. Jackson St. in Albany. The exhibit, which features 68 regional artists, will be open at the gallery until July 19. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 2-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and noon to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

 

Job fair planned for Saturday

DALTON, Ga. — The local NAACP chapter holds a career fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mack Gaston Community Center. Organizers say attendees will be able to speak to employers who can help them with their careers and introduce them to other professions and career fields.

 

 

LAMP to hold open house

VALDOSTA — Lowndes Association of Ministries to People is holding an open house, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., June 15. LAMP provides shelter and related services for the homeless. The open house will provide visitors “insight on the mission and values of LAMP and a tour of its facilities,” according to an organizational press release. “LAMP’s main goal for the open house is to ensure the people of Valdosta and surrounding areas know that there is a place that lends a hand.” Lunch will be provided for people who attend.
