MOULTRIE, Ga. — Robbers who targeted Hispanic residents in two separate armed intrusions on Saturday night made their assaults as the victims were returning home with groceries. In one instance, several gunshots were fired.

In the first robbery, a married couple returned to their residence in the 100 block of Bert Horne Avenue and were taking their purchases into the camper they share.

“The husband and wife come home from grocery shopping about 11:40 p.m.,” Colquitt County Sheriff’s Sgt. Timmy Barnes said. “The wife goes inside. Hubby is outside getting groceries. Two black males come around the side of the van from behind another van.”

Both men were armed with pistols and took an unknown amount of money, police said.

“One male went inside the residence, forced her (wife) on the bed and asked her for more money,” Barnes said. “When she said they didn’t have any, they ran off.”

Less than two hours later deputies responded to a second armed robbery in the 700 block of Jonah Tillman Road.

Six male farm workers returning home from shopping were confronted there by five men, all apparently armed with pistols.

“During this one there were (reported) shots fired,” Barnes said. “I think they were shot in the air. We don’t think it was at a person.”

The robbers hit one of the victims in the mouth, but he suffered only a minor injury that did not require medical treatment, Barnes said. The six men were robbed of their cash and cell phones.
