Chamber should promote return of DMV office

Dear editor:

I received my Georgia driver’s license renewal recently. Past experience warns me to check office hours before making the 60-mile (plus) round trip to the nearest license dispensing office (Thomasville).

The mailed notice failed to list phone numbers for the surrounding area’s dispensing points. You guessed it, the website phone listing was for the tag office.

The nice lady gave me the correct number, which I dialed and got their version of helpful suggestions on the many options available to me, “don’t hang up”, is the most unnerving suggestion offered.

I finished reading my local newspaper (with this interminable message repeating now for well over 30 minutes-(on my speaker phone) while I keep my composure and type this letter to the editor.

At some point, our state Legislature made the decision to close access to the good people of Colquitt County and reroute us to surrounding townships to get a driver’s license.

Their argument was to eliminate the expense of bi-weekly travel for two personnel to man the Moultrie license office.

Really? While you’re shopping out of town just pop into the license office and take care of licensing, you’re important to the DMV. And remember, your DMV loves you and have a nice day!

Possibly our Chamber of Commerce could intervene for Colquitt Countians and promote the resumption of a local DMV facility. Just a thought.
