TIFTON — The annual Farmers for Football camp returns Wednesday at E.B. Hamilton Park for two days of instruction for all boys entering 1st-6th grade in the fall of 2017.
Tift County High head football coach Ashley Anders said the goal of the camp was “fun.”
From 9-11:30 a.m. on both days, he said the participants will work on fundamentals on offense and defense. For some of the youngest campers, Farmers for Football will serve as an introduction to football.
The camp is free for those who registered in advance and is $20 for walk-ups on the day of camp. Registration forms were distributed at schools.
Instruction will be led by Tift middle and high school coaches, as well as Blue Devils players.
“We’ll have the whole staff,” he said.
The players seemingly have as much fun as their charges every year. Anders said about 20 of them had signed up to help out this year.
The youths will be divided into two groups: the “Pro division,” for 1st-3rd graders and the “NCAA division” for older campers.
This is the fifth year of Farmers for Football, which was introduced in 2013.
The program has produced dividends for the varsity Tift squad.
“I think it’s one of the things that’s helped,” said Anders.
The camp allows the players to get familiar with the coaching staff.
He said 120 sixth graders came out for football this spring. The most he can recall seeing in years past is 85.
Snacks will be provided each day. Popsicles are on the menu, according to Anders.
