Friends charged after fight; one says it was over drug money

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Hartsfield man, who reported a friend attacked him and stole his car, was arrested, along with the friend, who told police their argument resulted from a disagreement over $5 change involving a crack cocaine purchase.

Jakati Dontae Thomas, 42, approached police at about 4 a.m. Friday on First Avenue Southeast as they were responding to a report of a wanted suspect in the area. He reported being assaulted by the same man who took his Buick LeSabre Limited.

Thomas’ shirt was torn around the collar, police said, and it appeared that he had been in an altercation. He also was sweating noticeably and had on no shoes, police said.

A short time later an officer made a traffic stop on the Buick at First Avenue and 15th Street Southeast.

The driver of the car, Zekevis Lafel Williams, 27, told police that he had been riding with Thomas earlier in the evening and that he was on his way to the police station at the time he was stopped.

Williams, who also was sweaty and appeared to recently have been in a fight, was arrested, police said.

After an officer put Williams in a patrol car, he volunteered that he and Thomas had been at a “crack house,” where he gave Thomas $20. Thomas was supposed to use $15 of that amount to purchase crack cocaine and bring back $5 that he wanted to use to purchase cigarettes, Williams told police.

Thomas told police that he was giving Williams a ride to a convenience store, during which time he “got an attitude.” Thomas stopped the car and Williams took the keys and refused to get them back.

Police were unable to understand Thomas’s account from that point because he was breathing heavily and, after he complained of chest pains, was taken to the hospital.

Police issued Thomas, 5511 Hwy. 133 N., Doerun, a subpoena on a disorderly conduct charge, and Williams, of 1062 Bay Rockyford Road, was taken to jail on the same charge.
