VALDOSTA — The “most winningest” high school football program in the nation is holding its Eighth Annual Lil ‘Cats Camp for the next generation of Wildcats.

The instructional football camp is open to kids age 6-12 and will take place May 23 and 24 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, the very turf the Valdosta High School Wildcats play on.

From 9 a.m. to noon each day, Wildcat coaches and players will teach the kids about every team position, meaning every little tyke will get to be a quarterback, running back, offensive and defensive lineman, etc.

“What we’re trying to do is give kids a general basic understanding of all positions,” said DeMario Jones, VHS defensive line coach and director of football operations.

“This camp is specifically special because it caters to all of our kids that are not in our feeder programs. It gives the kids in our community … a chance to get specialized attention from our coaches and our seniors.”

The camp will be two-hand touch only, but the kids will get a chance to experience many common football drills.

“One of the kid favorites is always the tackling dummy, so that’ll be the closest anybody comes to making contact,” Jones said. “They’ll get to run into a bag and knock it down. It’s a big day for them to feel like a Wildcat.”

The camp will end with a “Cat Ball” game to allow the kids to try out what they’ve learned.

The camp costs $20, and lunch is provided each day. To pre-register, fill out the form at www.gocats.org/apps/news/article/713997 and deliver it to the Valdosta High School Athletic Department at the school.

Registration will also be available the day of the camp and will begin at 8 a.m.

“It’s a big day for us to give back to our youth … and give them a way to kickstart the summer,” Jones said.
