New Regional library to open in early 2018

VALDOSTA — Work on a new library building has cleared the first phase and is on track for an early 2018 opening, according to library staff. The new building was once the Solstas Lab Partners site at 2906 Julia Drive. South Georgia Regional Library’s Board of Trustees has an agreement with South Georgia Medical Center for the hospital to purchase the current library site on Woodrow Wilson Drive, surrounded by SGMC facilities, for $2 million when the library is finished relocating. Originally meant to open late this year, the library will instead open in early 2018 due to architectural changes, said Miguel Vicente, library director. The current library building opened in 1968, with a major expansion in 1995. Valdosta’s public library system can trace its roots back to the construction of the former Carnegie Library on West Central Avenue in 1913. Aside from the enlarged meeting space, the new library will offer a gallery space, study rooms, a genealogy facility, more parking, a modern media facility and a cafe offering drinks and snacks, Allums said. The new library will also offer a Friends of the Library store near the front entrance, she said. Currently, the Friends of the Library group sells retired library books out of a room in the back of the Woodrow Wilson Drive facility. The hospital has no definite plans for the old library property and will begin planning once the deal with the library system is closed, said Laura Love, SGMC spokeswoman.
