MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — One of the most successful seasons in Baldwin High School track and field history came to a close Saturday as the Braves and Bravettes showed they were some of the fastest runners and longest jumpers in the state.

The GHSA AAAA state championships were held in Rome Thursday through Saturday where one Brave and one Bravette reigned supreme when all was said and done.

Junior University of Tennessee commit Jatavious Harris proved that he is the fastest man in Class 4A after being crowned boys’ high-point champion. Harris posted a 10.65 in the 100-meter dash and a 21.51 in the 200-meter to outrun all of his competition. The junior was also a member of the boys’ 4×400 relay team with Evan Simmons, Darius Ruff and Dalvin Ruff that finished first with a time of 3:20.68. Harris is the first BHS boys’ athlete to bring home gold in any event at state in more than 30 years according to head coach Dexter Ricks.

On the girls’ side, senior Zykeria Williams proved why she received a scholarship offer from Indiana University as she took the girls’ high-point title. Williams ran a 13.69 in the 100-meter hurdles and leapt 18 feet-7 ¼ inches in the long jump to bring home first place in both of those events. She finished second in both the 200-meter dash and as a member of the 4×100 relay team as well as eighth in the 4×400 relay that helped claim her title.

The stellar individual performances helped both the boys’ and girls’ teams finish in the top four in the state as the boys grabbed third and the girls stood in fourth at the end of the weekend. Other than Harris and the first-place 4×400 relay team, the Baldwin boys did a majority of their damage in the field events. Milton Adams and Keldrick Bell each placed sixth in the long jump and triple jump, respectively, while Willie Williams finished fifth in the shot put. For the girls, Brittany Trawick took fifth in the 100-meter dash and seventh in the long jump. Mollie Speights brought home fifth in the high jump, Makayla Ricks finished eighth in the high jump, and Jakayla Hurbert was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles. Williams and Trawick were joined by Shekeria Collins and Jasmine Chester on the silver medal winning 4×100 relay team.
