Area athletes win at state track meet competition

- Ziaire Andrews of Irwin County was part of two first place wins in state track events. He was part of the 4x100 team (above) and won individually in the 200-meter dash.
TIFTON — There were a handful of first places for area schools at the state track meets, which played out all over Georgia this weekend.
Ziaire Andrews of Irwin County won first place in the Class A (public) 200-meter dash at Albany’s Hugh Mills Stadium, his time of 21.47 seconds easily giving him a victory over Javoris Smith of Twiggs County, who ran in 22.13 seconds.

Irwin had another first place in the 4×100 relay, also involving Andrews. He joined Cartavion Benyard, Ja’lin Shavers and Zack Tolar to run in 42.54 seconds.
According to MileSplit GA, Ontaria Wilson edged Clayton Harvey in the 400 to give Turner County an event first place, also in Class A (public). Wilson ran in 49.9 seconds, Harvey, from Montgomery County, finished in 50.03 seconds.
Trendarius Henderson was first for Turner in the 300 hurdles and just missed out on first place in the 110 hurdles. Henderson ran the former in 39.17 seconds and the latter in 14.96 seconds. In both races, he battled Warren County’s Jarvis Collins. Collins was first in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300.
In AAA, Brandon Doe of Cook won the high jump. He won a jump-off, with a final height of 6’2.”
The Fitzgerald boys were third as a team at the AA state meet, scoring 40 points. They trailed only Vidalia (71 points) and Bleckley County (66).
Willie Ross tied for the best height in the high jump, but had to settle for second place following a jump-off. Ross cleared 6’4.” Antonio Perry was runner-up in the triple jump at 45’9.” The Purple Hurricane additionally had a second place in the shot put, courtesy of Jason Poe’s 48’6” throw.

Ronald Garcia was fifth in the pole vault and Parker Kerigan was seventh. James Graham was eighth in the 110 hurdles, J.D. King was sixth in long jump.
Graham joined Montreil Harris, Quay Harper and Antonio Perry to come in fifth in the 4×100 relay.
Turner’s boys were fifth overall in Class A (public) at 39 points.
Besides Wilson’s and Henderson’s individual performances, they had the 4×400 team to aid their cause. Henderson and Wilson were both on the fourth place crew, with Aletan McKinney and Ta’Nasjae Westbrook also in the relay. Wilson and Henderson wrapped up their big days with fourth and eight place finishes, respectively in the long jump.
Tyleriah Graddic was fifth in the 100 hurdles, the only points for the Turner County girls.
Berrien was eighth in the Class AA girls meet with 24 points, thanks to a trio of second place finishes. Jeff Davis won the meet with 71 points.
Rebecca Chandler was second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:35.26, not even two seconds behind the winner. She was also second in the 3,200 in 12:34.31, trailing the winner by seven seconds.
Treyonna Boone had a runner-up finish in the shot put with a toss of 38’10.5.” Jordan Davis was fourth in the boys shot put (47’6.25”).
Benyard had a second place for Irwin in the long jump at 21’6.” Irwin’s efforts at the meet enabled them to also finish eighth, scoring 28 points.
Fitzgerald’s girls tied for 13th place at state in AA.
Kirstin Crook was part of all 14 of Fitzgerald’s points, courtesy of a fifth place finish in the 100 hurdles, sixth place in the 300 hurdles and eighth place in the long jump. She also joined the 4×100 team of Kiona Bonner, Kyah Crook and Kassundra Johnson in their third place 4×100 relay finish.
In Class AAA, which took place at Hugh Mills Stadium as well, Chavis Marshall was fourth for the Worth County boys in the triple jump.
Cook had a fourth place finish from Taliyah Carter in the girls meet in long jump.
Tift County’s sole representative at the state tournament, Emily Golden, was 15th in the 3,200 run.
Golden’s meet took place at Valhalla Stadium near Rome.
