Packer golf plays two-day North Georgia High School Classic

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County boys golf team continued preparations for the 36-hole Class 7A state golf tournament by playing in the two-day North Georgia High School Golf Classic last weekend.

In the event played at Dahlonega’s Achasta Golf Club, the Packers turned in rounds of 320 and 309 for a 629, good for ninth place.

Creekview High, which shot a 3-over 579 that included a 285 on a cold, windy and wet Friday, finished first.

Columbus High was second, three shots back. Harrison was third at 586. All three teams turned in sub-300 scores both days.

The tournament is part of the Georgia Junior Golf Tour.

Colquitt County was led by freshman Tanner Brown, whose 11-over 155 was good for a tie for 35th place.

Brown shot an 81 on the miserable first day of the tournament. He rebounded to shoot a 74 that included four birdies on Saturday.

J.W. Griffin and Harrison Kebler each shot a 16-over 160 with rounds of 82 and 78.

Griffin had his 82 on Friday, but came back to shoot 78 on Saturday.

Kebler shot 78 on the first round had an 82 the next day.

Both tied for 52nd.

Lance Blanchett had an 86 the first day but improved by 11 shots on Saturday to turn in a 75 that left him at 161 and in a tie for 55th.

Peyton Clark tied for 65th with a 79-85 for a 20-over 164.

Patrick Holman shot 99-93.

Also in the 19-team field at Achasta were South Forsyth, fourth, 602; Lambert, fifth, 604; Gainesville, sixth, 605; Milton, seventh, 614; Oconee County, eighth, 623; Blessed Trinity, 10th 630; Etowah, 11th, 638; Cambridge, 12th, 649; Habersham Central, 13th, 661; Mill Creek, 14th, 662; Hillgrove, 15th, 664; North Hall, 16th, 689; Roswell, 17th, 695; Woodward Academy, 18th, 713; Riverwood, 19th, 722.

The Packers will now concentrate on the Class 7A state golf tournament that will be held May 22-23 at the Legends course at Chateau Elan Golf Club in Braselton.

For the first time, the state championship will include 36 holes played over two days.

The Packers qualified for the state tournament with a 312 shot at the Area tournament held last week at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton.

Packers coach Donald Dale said he expects a strong field for the state tournament.

“There will be a lot of good teams there,” Dale said.
