- Andrew Johnson (shown at April’s Power Meet) is picking up multiple college football scholarship offers, so many that head coach Ashley Anders has lost count.
TIFTON — Tift County football fans will get their first look at what 2017 will hold Friday.
The team will hold an open practice at Brodie Field, followed by a “really good scrimmage,” according to head coach Ashley Anders, the Water Bowl, at 6 p.m.

The Water Bowl will be an intrasquad scrimmage. Anders said it would have a practice format to it, with down and distance situations. The Blue Devils will be bringing up the ninth grade squad to participate.
Admission to the game will be to bring a case of bottled water.
“We sure do need them,” said Anders.
Water helps power the team through Georgia’s scorching summers, which include organized team activities at different sites.
Spring football is nearly halfway through.
“Three down, seven to go,” said Anders on Tuesday.

He may have to rearrange one of those seven. Bad weather may be on the horizon Thursday, which could force him to move up practice to today.
The last day of spring practice will be May 12. On that day, Tift is scheduled to host Columbia High in a scrimmage game. The Georgia High School Association opened spring football up to intersquad games this year.
Practices, scrimmages and a rather large amount of players — estimated at 125 — are not the only things keeping Anders busy during the two-week period. He is also working with recruiters.
Several Devils, including Andrew Johnson and Ches Jackson, have hit college radars.
The offers for Johnson, a linebacker, have racked up so quickly that Anders has not been able to keep up. Just this week, he’s heard from The Citadel, Wake Forest, West Georgia and Kentucky.
Johnson tweeted that Western Kentucky had recently offered him a scholarship. Recruiting websites list Georgia, Georgia Tech, Oregon, Georgia Southern, Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, West Virginia and Tulane among the schools that have made scholarship offers to him.
Jackson has made recruiting trips to Florida State and Georgia Tech.
Anders said the visits will pay off for the rest of the team. Underclassmen will get more looks and it will make more Tift County players visible.
“All that does is help others,” he said.
