- Five Colquitt County Sheriff's Office investigators spent significant time on a case involving two suspects taken into custody on Monday and the recovery of as much as $10,000 worth of loot stolen in recent burglaries. They are Sgts. Austin Cannon, left, Chris Robinson and Michael Cox; Lt. Mike Murfin and Sgt. Timmy Barnes.
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Police on Monday rounded up stolen property — including guns, televisions, jewelry, guitars and expensive fishing tackle — worth thousands of dollars and took two suspects in for questioning.
After picking up the man and woman at a gold-buying business, police recovered property taken from some burglaries that occurred earlier in the day.
The suspects in those burglaries were in custody before those residents even knew their homes had been targeted.
“In two different burglaries we had property recovered before the homeowners, the victims, even knew about it,” said Lt. Mike Murfin of the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
Officers also recovered property stolen in other home break-ins that have occurred in recent weeks.
Property found was “connected with at least four residential burglaries,” Murfin said. “All are believed to have been committed by the same persons.”
The two, taken into custody in the vicinity of Moultrie Gold Buyers, were identified as a man and a woman. Police did not release their identities because they had not yet filed criminal charges.
Police had not identified them as suspects prior to Monday, but when they got a call from a Moultrie business that quickly changed.
“With the assistance of our local businesses such as Gold Buyers and (American Pawn) these persons came up on the radar and we began looking at them. “We began looking at them about 9 a.m. yesterday (Monday) morning, and they were in custody by 2:30 p.m.
Recent residential break-ins in which they are or could be developed as suspects occurred at a number of roads including Bay Rockyford, Cherokee Dive, Vinland Circle, Highway 111 and Kendalwood Church Road.
Most of the property recovered on Monday was at the two Moultrie stores.
The case remains under investigation.
Murfin expects the filing of formal charges today.
