MOULTRIE, Ga. — Myrtle Lofton presented a very informative program on perennials at the April meeting of the Magnolia Garden Club. She had asked each member to bring perennials to the meeting and they were displayed. Each was named and elaborated on as to the kind of soil and sun needed for best results. She also had a slide presentation that named more perennials that would be suitable for this area.
Faye Rowe opened the meeting and welcomed the group and visitors. Ruby Bowermeister had a short devotion and she led the group with the Pledge Allegiance to the Flag.
Shirley Mims called the roll and each member answered with the name of a bird. Dotti Bynum gave handout information on “Discovering Birds.” Lorena Barhite comments on the Community Guide magazine.
Mary Phillips gave an update on the Wildflower Symposium that was held in Tifton recently. The Magnolia and Cherokee Garden clubs furnished refreshments for the brunch.
Virginia Hart donated several Easter baskets of strawberries for the Fund Raiser Project. The winners for the strawberries were Ruby Bowermeister, Jackie Estep, Faye Rowe, Lorena Barhite and Grace O’Kelley.
Members brought items for the Fig Collection. These are items that are donated to the veterans such as socks, underwear, clothing, gloves, etc.
The Gardener’s Log for April is to plant annuals and perennials. Many perennials will improve if divided now. Spray for insects. Complete rose planting and spray until growing season with a fungicide.
Visitors at the April meeting were Dr. Hugh Lofton and Jackie Estep’s daughter, Karen Moore from Baltimore, Md.
The next meeting will be held May 2 at the Colquitt County Museum at 9:30 a.m.
