Public health district marks Immunization Week
ALBANY, Ga. — Immunization is a shared responsibility, benefiting individuals, families and the community as a whole, says Rebecca Snow, Southwest Health District’s immunization coordinator. “Vaccines are among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available for preventing disease and death,” she said. “Vaccines not only help protect our children, but can also help protect entire communities by preventing and reducing the spread of infectious diseases.” National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is April 22-29, and the Southwest Health District urges residents of Southwest Georgia to speak with a health care provider or doctor to make sure their infants are up-to-date on vaccinations. “One of the best ways to protect our children is to make sure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations,” said Snow. “An equally important way to protect our children is to ensure families and friends are current on their vaccinations to protect the little ones.”

ABAC named ‘Best Value School’ for fourth straight year
TIFTON, Ga. — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has been designated a Best Value School by University Research & Review (UR&R) for the fourth consecutive year. Only six colleges in the state of Georgia received this distinction this year. Tuition for a full time in-state student at ABAC is $4,066 per year. For out-of-state students, the cost is $12,324 per year.ABAC has also established the Neighbor Waiver program, an out-of-state tuition waiver that allows qualified students from Alabama, Florida and South Carolina to attend ABAC without paying out-of-state tuition. The Best Value School designation is determined by a qualification process, which generally takes three to four months. UR&R scours available data, including actual comments by a college’s students, to find schools to present to the nominating committee for consideration as a best value school. The nominating committee then does its own review. Schools that pass that hurdle are then examined at a staff meeting and if the majority votes in favor of the institution, the final steps in the process commence. The first of these steps determines what is special or unique about each school. If nothing can be identified as special or unique, the school is eliminated. Schools that pass that hurdle must then select an executive to be interviewed by UR&R’s founder. Only 81 colleges nationwide received this distinction for 2017. Other colleges in the state who received this recognition include Agnes Scott College, Beulah Heights University, Brenau University, Georgia Military College, and Young Harris College.
