- Hueston Morrill struck out nine and homered against Johnson Central High of Kentucky.
LIVE OAK — Inclement weather in different parts of north Florida almost canceled Suwannee’s game on Wednesday, but the Bulldogs found an opponent to play, and they picked up another win.
Behind a strong pitching performance from Hueston Morrill and a pair of home runs, SHS run-ruled Johnson Central High School (Kentucky) 11-1 in six innings.
Suwannee (14-2) was scheduled to play Wakulla while Johnson Central was set to play Madison County. But with after-school activities canceled in Wakulla and Madison County, SHS head coach Justin Bruce made some calls and got his team a game for Wednesday.
Morrill worked fast and pounded the strike zone, striking out nine hitters in five innings pitched. He allowed five hits — two coming from Golden Eagles’ leadoff hitter Geordon Blanton — and one run. Morrill has pitched well as both a starter and a reliever. After Wednesday’s win, he is now 3-1 on the mound with a 2.16 ERA.
“We slotted Hueston in a closing role earlier in the season. Around spring break we looked to him to complete our starting rotation,” Bruce said. “He’s a gamer. He’s ready no matter where you put him.”
Morrill went 2 for 3 at the plate with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Sam McMillan hit the Bulldogs’ other home run. McMillan’s three-run homer came in the fifth inning and gave Suwannee a 10-1 lead.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning and put together another four-run inning in the fifth. SHS rotated different players in throughout the game, getting production from reserves Marquis Jones, Trett Wadford and Zac Law. Jones stole two bases and hit an RBI double that scored Law. Wadford ended the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Blake Tedder.
Bruce was pleased with the effort he got from his bench.
“It’s good to see them come up and have some good things go their way,” Bruce said. “It helps the whole team. I thought Marquis did well on the bases.”
Tedder pitched the final inning for Suwannee after starting the game in center field. He also had two hits at the plate. Zane Stephens drove in two runs with a single in the first inning.
The Bulldogs are back in action tonight with an away game against Lafayette at 7 p.m.
