Three men convicted for stealing an 18-wheeler

DALTON, Ga. — Three men from Miami have been convicted by a Whitfield County jury under the state’s cargo theft law for stealing an 18-wheeler at the Tunnel Hill exit along I-75 in November 2014, believed to be the first trial and conviction in the state under the statute, according to the district attorney. Sentencing was set for May 18 by Superior Court Judge William Boyett. District Attorney Bert Poston said in a press release that the law, which went into effect in July 2014, provides additional penalties for “the growing problem of commercial cargo theft in Georgia and nationally,” including up to 30 years in prison and up to $1 million in fines. Convicted were Yosvani Cordero, 42; Yoandy Linares-Machado, 32; and Alexander Rodriguez-Moreno, 37. Poston said the trailer they stole had approximately $150,000 worth of batteries in it. Each face from five to 20 years in prison and fines from $150,000 to $1 million based on the value of the cargo, Poston said. They will remain in jail until sentencing.
