LIVE OAK — Columbia defeated Suwannee 12-0 in five innings on Monday to sweep the season series for the first time since 2014. The Tigers notched 11 hits and used a five-run fifth inning to win by run rule.

“You can’t make mistakes against good teams,” said Suwannee coach Jeff Smith. “We had six errors at least. As well as we played last week, we played just as poor tonight.”

Suwannee (11-6) was hitless until the fifth inning when Savannah Brown singled to left field.

The Bulldogs made two diving catches — one by center fielder Caileigh Croft in the second inning and another by Brown in the third — that looked like it could turn the momentum of the game. But the Tigers (10-4) were relentless on offense, scoring runs in every inning and taking advantage of errors.

They were led by freshmen Whitney Lee and Morgan Hoyle. Lee had three hits and Hoyle drove in three runs. Alaina Perry and Cris’Deona Beasley combined to pitch a shutout.

Smith didn’t feel Suwannee was pressing against its rival after dropping the first matchup earlier this season.

“We weren’t focused. We were really flat,” he said. “Hopefully we can get this out of our heads.”

SHS travels to Trenton tonight. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
