NASHVILLE — A chase and a standoff situation ended peacefully early Wednesday when a man gave himself up, according to the Berrien County Sheriff.

An argument between a boyfriend and a girlfriend in Lowndes County spilled over into a high-speed chase into Berrien, said Berrien County Sheriff Ray Paulk. A BOLO (Be On The Lookout) alert had been issued for the car involved, he said.

Nashville police pulled over the vehicle into the parking lot of the Pit Stop convenience store at 514 S. Davis Street, Paulk said. A store clerk said no one was in the Pit Stop at the time; the store had closed at 10:30 p.m. while the car was pulled over around 1 a.m., the clerk said.

The man had threatened to do harm and had guns in the car, Paulk said. The immediate area was evacuated, he said. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office was called in to assist, the sheriff said.

The standoff lasted for about three hours, Paulk said. A SWAT team from Lowndes County was summoned, but the man surrendered before they arrived, he said.

Paulk said the man was being held for evaluation.
