TIFTON — Tifton’s Ross Buckley will be one of the headliners of “Fight for a Cause,” a Saturday boxing event in Valdosta.

Fight for a Cause, which takes place at 7 p.m. at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center, will benefit 13 Rounds. According to the Fight for a Cause Facebook page, 13 Rounds is a non-profit group providing boxing classes to people with disabilities.

Tickets are $40 each.

Buckley will be a co-main eventer, battling Keegan Boyd. Other advertised matches are Evan Crossland versus Frank Epps and Jose Perez versus Trent McGuire.

Buckley is very familiar with Boyd.

“We used to be training partners,” said Buckley.

Boyd is undefeated, Buckley said, with a style he compared to a bull.

“He’ll come after you the whole time,” Buckley said. Speed, he said, will be his counter to Boyd’s power.

Boxing is a relatively new sport for Buckley. He said he got into it approximately five months ago after having been involved in MMA; Buckley competed in Tifton’s Fear No Battle 5 card in 2015.

Changing sports from MMA was a bit of a necessity.

“A year ago, I blew out my knee,” said Buckley.

After Saturday’s Valdosta fight, he plans to pursue boxing further.

Half of the main event of Fear No Battle 5 was Albert “Speedy” Martinez, another local fighter who has not only made his mark on MMA, but also on Buckley.

“I’m his protege,” said Buckley. The two have been working together for five years.

“He’s a great coach,” he said.
