MEIGS — Cheryl Walters resigned as the mayor of Meigs on Monday night. On Friday, she will return to the mayor’s seat.

Walters rescinded her resignation on Wednesday.

“The reason I resigned was because I couldn’t see anything moving forward,” Walters told the Times-Enterprise Wednesday. “The council members were constantly bickering and slandering each other.”

Walters added she felt hardship balancing her mayoral duties and the recent passing of her husband, Orville Creager.

“I put more responsibility on my own shoulders than I should have,” Walters said. “And I honestly felt guilty because of the support I had from the citizens.”

Issuing a verbal resignation at the beginning of Monday’s city council meeting, Walters exited the meeting shortly after.

Walters noted the reason she returned to the council is due to 3-to-3 voting, as there are six council members outside of Walters’ mayoral seat. Walters only gets a vote in the case of a tie.

“I thought that if the council had really been reluctant to pass any ordinances or do anything before, with a 3-and-3 lockdown, there wouldn’t be anything happening till the election in November, and it will be at least until December (until a mayor could be sworn in). And that’s why I came back.”

Walters added it is her understanding of the City of Meigs’ charter that a resignation is not proper unless it is written and submitted and presented to the council and attorney.

Assuming the mayor’s seat again, Walters addressed what she aims for the city council.

“I would like to see the council members learn how to govern and represent the citizens that they were elected to represent,” she said, “and for us to work together for the greater good and not for each other’s agendas.”

Walters was sworn in as the mayor of Meigs in September 2016, running uncontested in Meigs’ special election to fill the unexpired term of a former mayor.

The next election is scheduled for November 7, 2017.
