MOULTRIE, Ga. — An elderly Tifton man told police that he lives a clean life and is religious — but deputies say he apparently forgot one of the Ten Commandments. They’ve charged him with one count of burglary and suspect him in another theft.
Eugen Lee, 74, was caught on camera last week at a residence where property valued at $300 was stolen from a garage, said Sgt. Timmy Barnes, an investigator with the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office. Police did not recognize Lee since he lives out of town, but were able to recognize him and his car when he returned to the county.
“We had him on video conducting a burglary on Monday (March 6) on Friendship Trail,” Barnes said.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Lee two days later after they received a call about an attempted break-in in the 400 block of Seminole Drive.
“Wednesday of last week he was attempting to steal items out of a storage unit on Seminole Drive,” Barnes said.
Deputies caught up with Lee in the 200 block of that road.
The car he was driving was hard to miss: It was a neon green Volkswagen Beetle, which also was caught on video on March 6.
After police received the call on Seminole Drive, Lee stopped at a residence where a lawn mower service was working in a yard and there was a trailer containing equipment parked near the roadway, Barnes said. When someone asked what he was doing there, Lee inquired about a job mowing lawns.
He was still parked there when officers arrived, Barnes said.
“All the property taken has been returned to the owner,” Barnes said.
Deputies also turned up some other property at the time of Lee’s arrest that police believe was stolen.
“We do have some items that we have that are unaccounted for — that (may not) have been reported stolen,” Barnes said.
Lee, 1503 Central Ave. S., has been charged with one count of burglary.
