Cairo Council approves multiple property purchases

CAIRO, Ga. — The Cairo City Council approved acquiring four pieces of property at Monday’s meeting.
The first purchase was a $21,000 expenditure for a lot next to Holder Park.
Mayor Robert Burns said due to property owned by the city in the area, the acquisition looked like “a favorable purchase.”
The appraisal of the Holder Park property was completed by the Grady County Tax Assessor’s Office.
Mayor pro tem Ernest Cloud motioned to approve the purchase and Jimmy Douglas seconded.
The council approved three other property purchases after convening from a brief closed session.
The first was a $33,000 expenditure for a 14,700 square foot property from Richard Porter.
The second and third purchases were a $10,174.08 purchase of a 4,542 square foot parcel from Cairo City Attorney Tom Lehman and a 1,951 square foot property from the Zebulon Theater and Cairo’s Regional Cultural Center for $4,370.24.
The total purchase amount — $47,544.32 — is based on a $2.24 per square foot cost for each property.
The three properties are located behind the Zebulon Theater at 207 N Broad St. Lehman’s law firm, located at 221 N Broad St., is adjacent to the Zebulon Theater.
The City of Cairo owns the property next to the purchased Porter property.
The appraised amounts for the three properties were configured by an professional, independent appraisal service.
Approval of the purchases passed unanimously with Douglas motioning for approval and Council member Lannis Thornton seconding.
Council members did not disclose the intended purpose of the purchased property.
