DALTON, Ga. — No charges have been filed yet against an 85-year-old Cohutta man who ran a stop sign and caused a fatal two-truck accident in north Whitfield County Thursday afternoon, a Georgia State Patrol official said.

“The SCRT (Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team) is still investigating the accident,” GSP Cpl. E. Tommy Bonaparte said. “They will be working with the district attorney’s office to decide whether charges are warranted.”

Bonaparte said Ray Coffee was driving a red Dodge pickup south on Lake Kathy Road around 2:30 p.m. and ran the stop sign at Highway 201 (Tunnel Hill Varnell Road). Coffee’s truck struck a grey Nissan truck traveling southwest, towards I-75, on Highway 201.

The driver of the Nissan — Zachary Scott Hall, 49, of Tunnel Hill — was declared dead at the scene, Bonaparte said.

Coffee was taken to Hamilton Medical Center with what Bonaparte described as “serious” injuries. Coffee was released from the hospital Thursday night.

Several residents of the area around the intersection of Lake Kathy Road and Tunnel Hill Varnell Road said Thursday afternoon that accidents are common at the intersection. None could recall a fatal accident.
