ANDERSON, Ind. — Many people have undoubtedly basked in the beauty of the great outdoors on a hike, camping trip or other enjoyable activity.

Three Indiana residents are set to take their enjoyment of nature to another level. Kyle Carter, 27, his wife Jordan, 26, and best friend Brock Fesmire, 24, for the next six months will hike 2,160 miles along the Appalachian Trail from northern Georgia to Maine.

The trail starts at Springer Mountain in Georgia, passes through 14 states, and ends at Mount Katahdin in Maine.

They are hoping to cover 15 miles per day and plan to take one day each week as a rest day. They have budgeted $10 per day for each to cover expenses. They will chronicle their journey on a blog.

“Kyle and I went on portions of the Appalachian Trail for a couple of weeks at a time and fell in love with it,” Jordan told the Anderson, Indiana Herald Bulletin. “That’s how the dream all started.”

Jordan explained that during one of their hikes on the trail they spent a night with people walking the entire distance.

“We were sitting around a campfire and heard their stories,” she said. “We just fell in love with the idea.”

For the Carters, the dream of walking the trail has been evolving since 2014.

The couple moved to the West Coast for two years where they took advantage of hiking opportunities there.

Kyle said starting in Georgia is the most common way of hiking on the trail. “Otherwise, you have to start later in the year to go southbound, and you don’t want to deal with a bunch of snow,” he said.

The trio will leave Indiana on March 19; their first day on the trail will be March 21, the first day of spring.

Kyle said they have been training around their home in Anderson for a few weeks to get used to the 25-pound packs they will be carrying, not including food and water.

Each person will carry five days of food at a time, simple items, like rice and noodles, that can easily be prepared with hot water.

Fesmire said he learned of the Carters’ plans in the summer of 2015 and was instantly interested.

“When I was little I walked around the woods and enjoyed it, he said. “I probably won’t have another chance to do this.

Jordan said they have an amazing support system through family members. “They’re all interested in joining us for portions of the hike,” she said. “My dad, Mark Safford, will be spending the first week with us and plans to end the hike with us in Maine.”

“I would never have dreamed of doing this until we hiked a part of the trail,” Jordan said.

Kyle said the idea started as a joke with people asking when they were going to hike the entire trail.

Fesmire was among those who didn’t take them too seriously when they first mentioned it, but he came around.

This is not the only long-distance trek the Carters are considering. They have set their sights the 2,659-mile Pacific Coast Trail on the West Coast and the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail through the Rockies.
