LEESBURG – All arms are ready for the first Region 1-7A doubleheader of 2017, and an important momentum building win came with Wednesday’s road trip to Lee County High.

Colquitt County High’s Packers got four hits and two RBI from Logan Wheeler, and seven pitchers worked one inning each to defeat the Trojans 4-2. That ended Colquitt’s four-game losing skid, and it set things up in Tony Kirkland’s favor pitching-wise for today’s twinbill at Packer Park against the Lowndes High Vikings.

“Anytime you get a win, it’s great,” said Kirkland. “A win against a quality program like Lee is sweeter.”

Also sweet was 12 hits for the Packers. They also had a big hitting game last weekend facing powerful Walton High, but Kirkland said they never got a big inning going. He said Wednesday it was good to see runners on base getting picked up.

“We had a lot more life on the field,” the coach said.

And defense too with two double plays. Shortstop Gavin Patel turned one to get Colquitt and pitcher Austin Singletary out of a bases-loaded spot in the bottom of the first.

Catcher Jay Saunders threw out a would-be base-stealer to help Ethan Phillips pitch a scoreless second.

For scoring, Buck Blalock doubled in Tanner Wilson after Wilson’s leadoff hit in the top of the third.

In the fourth, Wheeler doubled and scored on Patel’s single.

The top of the fifth featured another Packer double, this by Singletary. Wheeler dropped a single in to score two.

Colquitt’s other double play came behind Blalock’s pitching effort in the fifth. Hayden Bledsoe – who had two hits – pitched a perfect sixth, and John Samuel Shenker fanned three in the seventh.

The Lowndes Vikings come to Moultrie after getting off to a 9-1 start, including Tuesday’s win against Ware County. They also have a walk-off win, 3-2, against Fitzgerald.
