MOULTRIE, Ga. — Moultrie firefighters extinguished a gas pump fire Saturday evening after a pickup struck the pump.

George Davis, of 10th Avenue Southeast, told Moultrie police he put his GMC Sierra in reverse to leave the BP convenience store at 103 Veterans Parkway. The vehicle accelerated backwards into the pump.

The fire department report said the pump detached from the floor mount and caught fire.

Davis pulled away from the pump and stopped a short distance away, and an employee inside the store activated the emergency gasoline shut-off, the fire department said.

The pump was heavily damaged by the fire, the MFD said. The awning over the pump suffered heavy smoke damage, and an upright support beam was damaged by the heat.

Police said Davis’s pickup had extensive damage to the rear bumper.

The police report also indicated two other vehicles had slight damage, but the narrative provided no details about where they were located or how they were damaged.
