‘A Night of Choral Music’ March 7 at ABAC First Tuesday Concert
TIFTON, Ga. – The Southern Chorale, the premier choral ensemble from Georgia Southern University, and acclaimed a cappella barbershop ensemble Southern Gentleman will perform during “A Night of Choral Music” at the First Tuesday Concert Series at 7 p.m. on March 7 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. This concert at the ABAC Chapel of All Faiths is open to the public at no charge. The Chorale will perform a dozen selections, including “Ave Maria” by Guiseppe Verdi and Ross C. Berhardt’s “Irish Blessing.” This performance is part of The Southern Chorale’s Georgia Southern University Choir Tour. The Southern Gentleman ensemble sings music steeped in the tradition of Barbershop Harmony and standards from the American Songbook. The Southern Chorale draws from GSU’s most talented vocal students, providing an exceptional musical experience for all who hear the elite group. The ensemble performs literature from all styles and periods with an emphasis on a cappella selections and masterworks with orchestra. Training videos to feature Colquitt County High nutrition staff
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt County High School was proud to host the School Nutrition Program of the Georgia Department of Education and Georgia Public Broadcasting as a site location for filming a series of training videos geared towards school nutrition professionals. In the effort to continually improve for the benefit of the Georgia students and the community at large, the Georgia School Nutrition Program leads the nation in innovation and professionalism in all areas of school nutrition, according to a press release from the Colquitt County School System. Colquitt County High School was chosen from among other top performing schools in the state to play host to this effort. Film crews captured the school nutrition staff in action as well as students enjoying delicious and nutritious meals in the cafeteria. A few fortunate students actually got the opportunity to show their acting skills as they helped GPB reenact several scenarios of student interaction with faculty and staff.
Goss to hold pair of cooking classes at library
LIVE OAK, Fla. — Lively, educational, and fun cooking classes to be held at Suwannee River Regional Library. Live demonstrations and free samples, at both upcoming classes Thursday and March 23, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. both days, at 1848 South Ohio Avenue. Participants of the “Bacon Makes Everything Better” class on Thursday will learn fun ways to use everyone’s favorite food. Class participation in the preparation of bacon-wrapped fried oreos and bacon cheeseburger meatloaf, is sure to be a hit. All of the dishes are demonstrated live and samples are available to everyone. Chef Laura Fowler Goss will share information regarding ingredient selection, seasonings, cooking methods, and servings. At the end of the program, recipe tips are available for the showcased dishes. Folks who join in on the “Farm to Table Freshness” class on March 23 will enjoy locally sourced ingredients, just harvested, as a part of an early springtime feast with the season’s bounty. Join for a fun night of fresh local farm to table demonstrations and samples, with lots of group participation. Kids 6 and above are welcome and encouraged to attend. The class is suitable for men and women, all those who enjoy farm fresh ingredients, simple technique, and delicious dishes. Goss, a classically trained chef, is an exciting chef to watch and an entertaining person who lights up a room with her enthusiasm and knowledge. Goss is a skilled presenter with a passion for food and cooking. These upcoming classes are filled with cooking tips, lots of interesting ideas, and a ton of fun. The Suwannee River Regional Library System is looking forward to this special show and encourages community participation. Chamber survey results to be announced
DALTON, Ga. — As part of the development of a community and economic development plan, the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday holds an informational session open to the public on the results of a survey of Dalton and Whitfield County residents on life in the area and their thoughts about the future, as well as a study of how the area compares to nine other communities across the Southeast with similar populations and demographics. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. at Dalton City Hall.
Gas prices inch up
VALDOSTA, Ga. — Gasoline prices rose slightly during the last week in Lowndes County. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in Valdosta Sunday was $2.17, up by one cent from seven days earlier, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report. The lowest price for gasoline in the city Sunday was $2.06 at a West Hill Avenue store, while the highest was $2.25 at a North Valdosta Road location, according to the price tracking website gasbuddy.com. No retailers in Valdosta were listed by gasbuddy as having fuel for less than $2 a gallon Sunday, continuing a months-long trend. Nationally, the average price for gasoline was $2.31, down by two cents from the previous Sunday, while Georgia’s average of $2.21 was unchanged in the same period, the auto club said. In Friday market action, benchmark U.S. crude gained 72 cents, or 1.4 percent, to close at $53.33 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, used to price international oils, added 82 cents, or 1.5 percent, to close at $55.90 a barrel in London. Wholesale gasoline picked up a penny to close at $1.65 a gallon. Heating oil added a penny to close at $1.59 a gallon. Natural gas rose 2 cents to close at $2.83 per 1,000 cubic feet.
