Yes indeed, it is complicated

MOULTRIE, Ga —
On the front page of The Moultrie Observer this week we featured a story about Moultrian Bonnie Griner who needs a double-lung transplant due to her battle with cystic fibrosis.
Bonnie’s story highlights many factors in the pursuit of life-saving devices and procedures. It speaks of availability, affordability, family stress and timelines.
President Trump said this week, “Nobody knew that health care could be so complicated.”
Well actually, many of us know full well how complicated it can be. We have first-hand experience. We are well-versed.
Quite often we read of new developments in modern medicine … a new treatment or perhaps even a cure.
And for those of us who have journeyed these paths, our first questions are: When will it be available and how much will it cost? Will our insurance cover these procedures?
Many of us have learned that insurance companies can kick out portions of claims even though doctors say they are necessary. One can appeal and appeal again. Sometimes, an appeal is successful. But it’s time consuming and frustrating in a period of one’s life when stress is already about to blow the lid off.
Our prayers and best wishes go with Bonnie as she begins her long journey at Duke University Hospital. She represents many who have found themselves in a health dilemma that is no fault of their own.
Once we’ve experienced these kinds of challenges or have been closely associated with those who have been down that road, we gain a better appreciation for the doctors whose skills may ease our burdens and the medical research that has provided them the latest tools and technology to save and improve lives.
Bonnie’s story puts a face and a name on an issue that too often is treated generically. Health care is indeed a major issue in our country. And yes, Mr. President, it is complex! Welcome to our world.
