MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Officials are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death of a man discovered Saturday in a local apartment.
Robert Stephen Garapola returned home from work and discovered the victim’s body inside his Cedar Ridge Apartment shortly after 10 p.m., local authorities said.
Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Capt. Brad King said Garapola discovered a 28-year-old man, later identified as Kadeem Winston A. Simon, lying on the kitchen floor. He died from what was thought to have been multiple gunshot wounds.
The autopsy was performed Monday morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory in Macon. The results of the autopsy still were pending Monday afternoon.
“It was obvious to (Garapola) that there had been a shooting, and he believed the person to be deceased,” King told The Union-Recorder.
Garapola, who lives with a female roommate, told authorities he didn’t know where his roommate was at the time.
“She was not at home,” King said. “And her vehicle was not at home.”
The woman, whose name is being withheld by authorities, has been taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for misdemeanor probation violation stemming from a previous driving under the influence conviction. She is considered a person of interest in the case.
Through an investigation of the crime scene, it was determined that a number of rounds had been fired inside the living room and the kitchen of the apartment, King said.
Detectives Thomas “T.J.” Hargrove along with Bob Butch and Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Shannon Resha processed the crime scene for six to seven hours.
King said he requested the assistance of the GBI Region 6 Office in Milledgeville to help in processing the crime scene and examining the scene for evidence.
King said several shell casings from a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol were recovered in the living room and kitchen of the apartment, located at 141 S.W. Frank Bone Road.
Deputies Oscar Garcia and Ashley Brown went to the apartment earlier to check out a 911 emergency call about a person being “down” from an apparent gunshot wound.
When deputies talked with Garapola, he told them he didn’t know the victim.
The deputies later received assistance from Deputy Sgt. Shawn Tapley, as well as officers with the Milledgeville Police Department.
Tapley later notified King, as well as Capt. Michael Lumpkin and Sheriff Bill Massee.
“The investigation has shown that the female who lived at the residence was an acquaintance of his (victim),” King said. “She did know Kadeem.”
The woman currently is being held in the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center on an unrelated charge, King said.
“At this time, we consider her to be a person of interest,” King said.
As of Monday afternoon, local authorities had made no arrest in connection with the slaying.
The death is the first homicide case of 2017 in Baldwin County.
