McCarty off to fast start for Florida A&M

Aubrey McCarty has quickly shown his versatility in his first four games for the Florida A&M baseball team.
The former Packer is 10-for-17, a cool .588 batting average, with a triple and six runs batted in for the 2-2 Rattlers.
He also is 1-0 on the mound with a 3.60 ERA after winning his first start in an 8-7 victory over Wofford last Sunday.
McCarty was at Vanderbilt for two seasons before transferring to Gordon State last season.
Florida A&M will play host to George Washington today.
Of this and that:
• Mack Hathcock, McCarty’s former Colquitt County High teammate, is batting leadoff and playing center field for Troy, helping the Trojans get off to a 2-2 start.
In a recent game, Hathcock went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.
Also playing college baseball are former Packers Ross Goforth, at Northwest Florida State; Kodi Bishop, at Andrew College; and Colin Kirkland, at Thomas University.
• The Mercer University women’s golf team won the 18-team Amelia Island Collegiate.
Former Lady Packer Marin Hanna shot a 75-76-79 for the Bears. Mercer will play next on March 6 in the University of North Florida Collegiate in Jacksonville.
• Former Packer quarterback Greg Robinson has been named the offensive coordinator at Perry High.
Robinson has been the head coach at Dodge County for six years and at Houston County for five years.
• Valdosta State freshman softball player Amber Kling has hits in three of her first six at bats for the Blazers, who are 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
She has started two games as the designated hitter.
The Blazers will play a doubleheader against West Florida at home on Saturday.
• Makeba Ponder scored a season-high 20 points against UT-Arlington last week.
The junior from Moultrie hit on 7-of-12 3-point shots and is now averaging 9.2 points a game.
The Panthers played at Arkansas State Thursday night and will open play in the conference tournament in New Orleans on March 9.
• Dexshalyn Polite is averaging 5.6 points for St. Petersurg College and Ta’Kerria Waters is averaging 3.9 for Central Georgia Tech.
• Cheyenne Tillman is hitting .279 for the Andrew College softball team.
She has six doubles a home run and has driven in 10 runs.
• David Forehand won at No.6 singles 6-4, 6-2 over Camden Tucker last Friday in Emmanuel College’s lost to Lenoir-Rhyne. The Lions played at Erskine on Thursday.
