Tifton volunteers attend CASA Day at the Capitol
TIFTON, Ga. — Court Appointed Special Advocate Volunteer Miles Drummond and Advocacy Coordinator Julie Mitcham from Coastal Plain CASA attended the annual “CASA Day at the Capitol” event in Atlanta on Feb. 7. The day included meeting with Senator Tyler Harper, Senator Greg Kirk and Representative Clay Pirkle to ask for support of CASA and child welfare issues. CASA is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family. Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Georgia Military College sign Articulation Agreement
ROME, Ga. — Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) and Georgia Military College (GMC) held an articulation agreement signing ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Floyd County Campus in Rome. The goal of the articulation agreement is to provide associate of applied science (AAS) graduates of select Georgia Northwestern Technical College programs with an opportunity to continue with Georgia Military College to earn a bachelor of applied science (BAS) degree. Under the agreement, any GNTC student graduating with his or her AAS degree and having at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of technical/occupational credit accepted as transfer credit by GMC, is guaranteed admission into one of GMC’s BAS degree programs in business management or supervision and management. The agreement formally recognizes that Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Georgia Military College are committed to the establishment of an educational partnership to better serve currently enrolled and future students at both institutions, as well as, support economic and workforce development in the communities served by these educational institutions.
Hamilton County school board schedules three community meetings
JASPER, Fla. — The Hamilton County School Board is hosting three community meetings to discuss the new Hamilton County Elementary School. Community members are encouraged to come to express concerns and possible plans for the three elementary schools that will be closed once the new school opens. The meetings will be held Tuesday at the North Hamilton Elementary School, March 2 at the Central Hamilton Elementary School and March 7 at South Hamilton Elementary School. All three meetings will begin at 6 p.m.
Spots open for Youth Preparedness Council
DALTON, Ga. — No one is ever too young to be involved in emergency preparedness, officials with Whitfield County Emergency Management point out. Youth from across the nation have the opportunity to do just that while making a difference and transforming resiliency for their communities. Students who are in 8th through 11th grades are invited to apply to join the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Youth Preparedness Council. Applications are now being accepted. The selected members represent the youth perspective on preparedness. They meet with FEMA on a regular basis to provide input on strategies, initiatives and projects during their term. The council is open to current 8th- through 11th-grade students who have done one or more of the following: participated in community activities, served in a leadership role, lived through a disaster and shared that experience, or participated in an emergency preparedness activity or training.
