BERLIN, Ga. — A Florida man pulled over by Berlin police faces weapons and drug charges after the officer smelled the aroma of marijuana and additional investigation led to the seizure of a large sum of cash and suspected marijuana.
Dale Phillip Harris was driving the car when the Berlin Police Department officer made a stop at about 10:24 p.m. in the 1300 block of Wesley Chapel Road. The initial stop was made because Harris failed to maintain his lane, police said.

“When [the officer] walked up to the vehicle he smelled marijuana,” said Sgt. Justin Searcy of the Colquitt County Drug Enforcement Team. “He called additional officers for back-up.”
As the officer waited for assistance, Searcy said, Harris admitted having drugs and a large amount of cash in the car, at which time the officer called for Searcy, the on-call drug agent that night.
“When I arrived a deputy already had taken a firearm out of the car,” Searcy said. “I searched the vehicle and found a camo bag that contained $3,000 in cash, scales, packaging materials, glass smoking devices (and) more drug paraphernalia.”
Less than an ounce of suspected marijuana was found in the car, Searcy said. The gun recovered by the deputy was a .357-caliber pistol.
Although the amount of marijuana was not excessive, the packaging materials and other items found “are commonly associated with the sale and distribution of marijuana,” sheriff’s Lt. Sean Ladson said.
Harris, 32, 9018 Old Woodville Road, Tallahassee, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm while trying to commit crimes, and two traffic charges — driving while license withdrawn and failure to drive within single lane.

Harris claimed possession of the money, gun and other items, and a woman who was with him was released without police filing charges against her.
