MOULTRIE, Ga. — It was a sad day last week for “mom and pop” store owners in Dawson, Ga., when the owners learned furniture they had purchased was stolen.
It allegedly was purchased from the suspect in the theft of three semi trailers. And now it will go back to the rightful owners.
On Monday, the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office released a still photo of the suspect. It was taken at the downtown Dawson business via a security camera. The Dawson store apparently is out the money it paid for the stolen goods. The same man sold furniture there on three different occasions, sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Robinson said.
Much of the furniture stolen from two separate thefts in Cairo and a third outside Moultrie were recovered there, Robinson said.
“It was a little mom-and-pop store off of Main Street in Dawson,” he said. “They got the guy (on video) making the transactions. It was the same guy all three times.”
Robinson also located two of the stolen trailers in Albany last week. He believes the suspect, who had not been identified, lives in Dougherty County or Lee County.
All three trailers stolen belong to Broadleaf Trucking. On Feb. 11 a truck containing 68 pieces of furniture was stolen from 3333 Freedom Lane outside Moultrie. Video there showed a man drive a semi truck to that location at about 10:34 p.m. and drive away hauling the trailer.
That trailer and two stolen earlier in Cairo all were filled with Mactavish furniture products.
“We recovered everything but five pieces of furniture from Colquitt County,” Robinson said. “We recovered the first one that was stolen on Feb. 1 in Cairo and the one (taken) Feb. 11 from here.”
Furniture from both thefts in Cairo also were recovered at the Dawson store, he said.
The furniture stolen in Colquitt County was valued at $15,000, and the stolen trailer at $8,000. furniture they had purachased was stolen.
