MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A 19-year-old Milledgeville man, already on probation for a previous felony conviction, has been arrested again on new criminal charges.
The suspect was identified as Austin Ryan Coyle, of 128 Marion Street, according to an incident report filed by Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brandon Clements.
Coyle is charged with felony theft by taking of a vehicle, driving while unlicensed and failure to maintain lane, records show.
The theft charge was filed against the suspect by the Milledgeville Police Department since the 2003 Toyota Tundra was stolen from within the city limits.
The traffic charges were filed by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
After Coyle was arrested, he was taken to the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center and jailed.
Clements said in his report that he responded to a call concerning a pickup truck in a ditch on the 100 block of Selma Drive.
The deputy said when he drove up in his patrol car that he spotted a man, later identified as Coyle, standing in the roadway near the truck.
Clements said before he got out of his car that he also saw another man, who was wearing all red clothing. The man threw a book bag from the truck to Coyle, the deputy said.
The man dressed in all red then walked away.
Coyle claimed that the man had stopped to assist him in trying to get the truck out of the ditch, Clements said.
When the deputy asked how the truck got into the ditch, Coyle reportedly told him that a friend of his was driving the truck. The suspect said he knew the man only by the name of “Kay,” who left the area before the deputy got to the scene.
Clements later learned from a dispatcher that the truck had been reported stolen from someone in the city limits a few minutes earlier.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and questioned by the deputy in his patrol car.
During the conversation with Clements, Coyle admitted that he was under state probation with the Milledgeville office.
Coyle reportedly changed his story about what actually happened and how the truck ended up in the ditch, etc.
“He kept getting fumbled up with each story,” Clements said.
