THOMASVILLE, Ga. — A former Meigs mayor convicted earlier this month of two felonies violated bond conditions Monday.

Linda Harris was convicted Feb. 3 of theft by taking City of Meigs funds and violation of oath of office. A bond condition — before the trial and after conviction — was that she cannot go to Meigs City Hall.

At 11:05 a.m. Monday, Harris went to Meigs City Hall to pay her water bill and left. A city hall employee reported Harris’ presence to the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office.

The employee called Harris and told her she was not to go on city hall property or call city hall.

According to a sheriff’s office incident report, Harris told the employee sheriff’s office personnel told her she could go on the property.

The report shows that around 11:30 a.m. Monday, Harris called sheriff’s office Capt. Steven Jones and asked if her bond conditions were still in place. Jones told Harris “she was told by Judge (Richard) Cowart she could remain on bond until her sentence date, and all bond conditions were to remain in place,” the report says.

Harris said she called another sheriff’s office employee earlier Monday and was told she could go to city hall. The sheriff’s office employee said she did not tell Harris she could go to city hall and never discussed city hall with the ex-mayor.

“The district attorney’s office is aware that (Linda) Harris went to Meigs City Hall on Feb. 13, 2017,” said Ray Auman, Thomasville-based senior assistant district attorney who was the prosecutor in the Harris trial. “This was a violation of her conditions of bond. The sentencing judge will be made aware of this.”

Sentencing is set for March 23 in Thomas County Superior Court.

A deputy responded to Meigs after the Monday city hall incident and made a report.

“The report was made as a criminal trespass,” Jones told the Times-Enterprise Friday. “It’s being investigated.”
