LIVE OAK — Suwannee High baseball fans got a sneak peek of the Bulldogs’ dominating 1-2 starting pitching combination during Saturday’s Green and White Scrimmage at Booster Field.
Zane Stephens pitched four no-hit innings and struck out eight while Kyle Gamble threw four innings, striking out five without allowing an earned run.
The green team took a 6-1 victory, but the story was pitching.
Suwannee coach Justin Bruce said he was impressed with Stephens and Gamble. He also saw some good things at the plate from a pair of seniors.
Catcher Sam McMillan, who was named team captain, picked up three hits on Saturday and threw out a base stealer. Braxton Furry went 2 for 3.
Suwannee travels to Leon High on Thursday and Saturday to play its preseason games. The Bulldogs open the regular season at home on Tuesday against Madison County.
SHS alumni competed in a home run derby and softball game following the scrimmage. Ryan Stovall, a 2005 graduate who reached Class AAA in the minor leagues and also won an Australian Baseball League Championship, won the home run derby.
