Magnolia Garden Club learns about bees

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Jessie Bowen, ag teacher at CCHS, with some of his students, gave the Magnolia Garden Club a great lesson on bees.
Kirk Beahman, Mary Logan Tosterson, and Mary Grace Harbin, were enthused about caring for bees and they gave their views on bee keeping. They said that it was important to the environment to have for pollination.

For Safety First, they brought their safety suit, which they wear to handle the bees. They had a frame that the bees make their honeycombs in and displayed other items for use in caring for the bees.
Bees are pretty self sufficient, they said. The queen bee is much larger and darker than the worker bees. The bee population does have some pests, like beetles, etc. If you eat the honey that is made in your area, (not store bought honey on the grocer shelf) it will cure your allergies, they said. This was an interesting and educational lesson on bees.
Faye Rowe opened the meeting. Ruby Bowermeister had a short devotion on “Mirror Images,” and her text was from I John 3.
Virginia Hart gave the treasury report. The roll call was answered with the name of a rose. The Wild Flower Symposium was discussed and it will be held in Tifton on March 22.
The Magnolia Garden Club has started a new fund raiser. The winners this month were Faye Rowe, Odelle Cato and Lorena Barhite.
Mary Phillips judged the horticulture specimens brought by each member and she used the specimens which consisted of flowers, fern, and shrubs to made a beautiful bouquet and presented to Faye Bridwell at the Museum of Colquitt County History.
