MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday that it would release the names of a law enforcement officer involved in a Saturday afternoon shooting and the domestic-violence suspect who reportedly rushed the deputy, but later in the day the agency said it would postpone naming the two until today.

Colquitt County E-911 dispatched a deputy Saturday afternoon to a Blackberry Lane residence to investigate a domestic dispute, the GBI’s Thomasville office said in a statement released by email. When Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived the suspect was in the back yard.

Prior to their arrival, the man reportedly had assaulted residents at that location and destroyed property inside the residence.

“A deputy attempted to speak with the subject who then began running at the deputy, refusing to stop after being given verbal commands to do so,” according to the GBI’s news release. “The deputy fired and struck the subject. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.”

The deputy was not injured, the agency said. The investigation was continuing on Monday and police were looking to speak with additional witnesses.

The initial release from the GBI did not mention whether or     not the suspect was armed.

Jamy Steinberg, special agent in charge at the Thomasville office, told The Observer on Monday morning that the agency likely would release the men’s identities some time that day, but he later said it would be today instead.

Blackberry Lane is located a little less than two miles north of Autreyville off Highway 33.
