DALTON, Ga. — Officials with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office believe they have identified the skeletal remains found Sunday in the woods in the remote western portion of the county and say they don’t suspect foul play.

A release from the sheriff’s office gave a tentative identification of the remains as Gary Wayne Fingerle of Rome, who was reported missing in November 2016. Fingerle’s truck was found abandoned on Forestry Service Road 219 in Walker County, about three-and-a-half miles from where the remains were discovered.

A couple from Dalton hiking in the wilderness area near Gordon Springs Road and LaFayette Highway near the Walker County line discovered a human skull on Sunday. Investigators found the rest of the skeletal remains of a male nearby.  The release said Fingerle was an avid hiker and he was reported missing to the Rome Police Department. Dental records from Fingerle have been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab to help in identifying the body.
