I-75 back open after morning closure

After being closed around four hours Tuesday morning due to heavy fog and smoke, Interstate 75 has been reopened near the Suwannee-Columbia county line.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, both the northbound and southland lanes were fully reopened at 11 a.m.

The road closure happened around 7 a.m. this morning with low visibility near mile marker 440 according to FHP. The interstate wa closed from mile marker 439 to 451.

The smoke came from a controlled burn in the area according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

The northbound traffic was being detoured off the interstate at County Road 136 at the White Springs exit at mile marker 439 where travelers would travel east on CR 136 to US Highway 41 north to US Highway 129, where theyw ould travel south to get back on to I-75.

Southbound traffic was being detoured off at US 129 at the Jasper exit at mile marker 451 where travelers would travel south on 129 to I-10 where they could travel east to reconnect with I-75.

In addition to the road closures, two accidents happened in the southbound lanes of I-75 in Hamilton County on Tuesday morning as well. There was a crash near mile marker 454 at 9:42 a.m. according to FHP as well as a hit and run crash near mile marker 451, where the road was closed, around 11 a.m.
