MOULTRIE, Ga. — To paraphrase the late Rodney Dangerfield, in recent days it seems Colquitt County kids have been going to a fight and seeing a school day break out.
Twelve teen-agers were arrested, with five facing felony charges, after Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated a total of six violent episodes. Five occurred at C.A. Gray Junior High and one at Colquitt County High. Two law enforcement officers are assigned to the junior high as school resource officers and there are four of those officers at the high school
At 10:30 a.m. Friday one of the officers at Gray responded to a reported fight on the bottom floor of Building G at the campus. The fight involved five 15-year-old students in an apparent four-on-one situation. Four were charged with aggravated assault, which is a felony, and battery.
“What it amounted to is one of the kids was on the floor and (being) kicked,” said sheriff’s Lt. David Kent, whose duties include overseeing the school resources at the various campuses. “That constitutes aggravated assault according to our DA.”
At about 1:30 p.m. Friday a deputy broke up a fight in a classroom at CCHS. After investigating the incident, police charged Andrew Lane Jiminez, 17, with criminal gang activity, which is a felony, affray and simple battery.
“This particular incident, the offender (Jiminez) was basically being a smart aleck in class and threw his gang signs at another student, (who) apparently didn’t like it,” Kent said. “He was charged with gang activity because of a video taken on a cell phone of him doing the gang signs toward the other student.”
The other three Friday fights at C.A. Gray occurred at 11:30 a.m., noon and 12:45 p.m., police said.
They included a fight between two 14-year-old girls, one of whom was charged with simple battery; two 14-year-old boys, both charged with battery, who fought a 14-year-old male student; and a fight between boys ages 14 and 16, both of whom were charged with affray.
At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday students ages 13 and 16 fought at C.A. Gray over a situation that had been brewing over the weekend.
“Two girls got into a fight over some issues from social media that had been occurring over the weekend,” Kent said.
“Obviously that is not normal, what happened Friday,” he said of the rash of violent incidents on school campuses. “It happens that way, sometimes. Like anything else it comes in spurts.”
Overall, he said, violence at county schools is down this year.
