DALTON, Ga. — The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office is awaiting autopsy results following the death of a 19-month-old boy who was found unresponsive on Monday afternoon.

Capt. Rick Swiney said the death of Terry Gibson is under investigation after the mother, 26-year-old Tiffany Gibson, reported finding the child unresponsive after suffering from a fever the night before.

Swiney said the sheriff’s office is working with representatives of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS), which has had contact with the family in the past. DFCS records are not open to the public, and Swiney declined to discuss the reasons for past interactions between the family and DFCS workers.

“There really isn’t a whole lot we know at this time,” Swiney said. “We know that the DFCS has previously been involved with this family, but I can’t really discuss that. Everything else concerning the case, until the autopsy can tell us more, we just don’t know yet.”

According to a news release Wednesday from Sheriff Scott Chitwood, the child was found dead by officers who responded to a dispatch call for 124 Latonia Drive at 2:25 on Monday afternoon. Latonia Drive is off of Manis Road, north of Dalton off of Beaverdale Road.

Tiffany Gibson, the mother of the child, told officers the child had been running a fever on Sunday night and she checked on the child at 5 a.m.

“She advised when she checked on the child again at 2 p.m. she found the child unresponsive in his crib,” according to the release.

The body of the child has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab to determine a cause of death.
