In other action Tuesday, Moultrie City Council:
• Approved a license to sell beer, wine and liquor for off-premises consumption for Nitinkumar Patel, owner of Liquor Barrel, 506 Ga. Highway 133 S., following a public hearing at which no one spoke.
• Set qualifying fees at $208.70 for mayor and $178.20 for council members (both 3 percent of the annual salary).
• Approved an intergovernmental agreement for solid waste disposal with the City of Thomasville. The agreement will allow Moutrie to dump the waste it picks up from residents at a cost of $24 per ton — down from $26 per ton in the previous contract. A gradual increase in cost is built into the contract but is not expected to exceed $26 per ton even at the end of the contract period, Moultrie City Manager Pete Dillard said.
• Recognized Georgia Cities Week April 23-29 as a state-wide event with the theme “Cities in the Mix.”
• Agreed to buy a 2017 backhoe loader for $85,594.28 from Flint Equipment in Albany for the Public Works Department.
• Approved a budget amendment to increase the cost to replace a well pump that services the hospital. The increased cost is for a motor starter that allows the pump to power up gradually and increases the life expectancy of the pump.
• Voted to temporarily move $456,000 from the utility reserve fund to pay for work at the sewer plant on West Boulevard. The money is expected from a loan that the city has already been approved for but it has not been disbursed, Dillard said.
• Tabled a budget amendment to pay ESG, the company that operates the city’s water and sewer utilities, approximately $217,000. The contract with ESG allows the company to purchase items for the city facilities outside the specifics of the contract then bill the city, but city officials are challenging some of the expenditures that make up the $217,000 bill. Dillard said company officials will meet with city staff soon to seek a resolution.
