LIVE OAK, Fla. — A commercial passenger bus caught fire on Interstate-10 on Wednesday around 2 p.m. after its rear driver-side tire suffered a mechanical malfunction and burst into flames.
According to Suwannee County Fire Rescue, the driver failed to notice the rear tire in flames and continued to drive west. The initial fire caused a small brush fire, but was quickly put out.
When the rear tire finally gave out, the driver pulled the bus over to the side where it quickly burst into flame, said James Sommers, Suwannee County Public Safety Director.
There were only two people on board at the time of the fire. Both were able to escape without injury, Sommers said.
Westbound traffic on I-10 was blocked for a little more than an hour as SCFR crews extinguished the flames.
